How We Began
The North Queensland Sports Foundation came about via a meeting in Townsville of prominent sports visionaries to address the lack of opportunities for North Queensland sports men and women. The concept of a multi-sport event was discussed during 1983 and the Games came to fruition in 1984 as the first North Queensland Games.
The North Queensland Sports Foundation has over 35 years’ experience working with our Local North Queensland Councils and communities providing opportunities to foster and strengthening active participation in the region. The NQSF has developed an effective network over this period that includes Peak Sporting Bodies, all levels of government and corporate partners to deliver our portfolio. The NQSF consistently surveys the landscape for opportunities to maximize outcomes for our North Queensland members.
The NQSF formed a Joint Venture partnership with Northern Queensland Primary Health Network in 2018 to develop a strategy to better engage the inactive members of our communities. The project is a coordinated approach to delivering community health and wellbeing intervention bundles to combat obesity and associated chronic disease.
The NQSF formed a partnership with CQ University to provide 3 High Performance Sports Scholarships for our NQ Athletes. Athletes who are considering further education and have the capacity to develop their sporting careers in NQ will have access to the scholarship program.
We are driven to assist our members with the development of sport and increase active participation in regional and remote North Queensland. We provide advocacy, events, scholarships and information to all stakeholders. The Foundation is the only Non-Government agency operating independently in this area of North Queensland.
