Exciting Sporting Initiative to acknowledge North Queensland Sportstars
Ever wondered how many sportsmen and women from North Queensland have represented Australia? Ever wondered where they were born? How proud are we in North Queensland about our sporting heroes?
To answer all these questions, the North Queensland Sports Foundation is about to launch the North Queensland Green and Gold Club. Using its very creative web site, the North Queensland Sports Foundation seeks to acknowledge the sporting achievements of all its Australian representatives from North Queensland.
The North Queensland Green and Gold Club will be launched at 1pm on Friday 5 December at the Cowboys Leagues Club in Flinders Mall, Townsville.
Radio identity Dave Harrison from 4TO will introduce the North Queensland Green and Gold Club, as well as guest of honour Kylie Shadbolt. Kylie was born, and still lives in Cairns and has an outstanding career in gymnastics.
Kylie represented Australia in Gymnastics in both Commonwealth (1990) and Olympic Games (1992), and was named Australian Gymnast of the Year in 1990. She has just been appointed the Australian Coach for level 10 gymnastics. Kylie is a model example of all that is worthy in athletes from North Queensland in her determination to succeed. The North Queensland Sports Foundation is pleased to have her officially launch its North Queensland Green and Gold Club.
The North Queensland Sports Foundation confidently predicts that North Queenslanders will be surprised at how many North Queensland born athletes have progressed to the pinnacle of representing their country. It is estimated that approximately 300 North Queensland born athletes have represented Australia in a variety of sports, such as rugby league, soccer, swimming and athletics and a host of lesser-known sports.
There are a number of well-known superstars such as Cathy Freeman, Susie O’Neill and Gorden Tallis. But how many more are unsung heroes of North Queensland?
People will be able to search the web site (www.nqsports.com.au) to discover information about the sporting identities, their place of birth and information on that place. Local communities in North Queensland will no doubt be determined that all the sporting heroes from their locale will be included in the future. School projects will become a regular activity in the future.
Gaining appropriate recognition the North Queensland Green and Gold Club will build as people ensure that their friends, relatives or perhaps neighbours who are Australian representatives are included in this club. The North Queensland Sports Foundation is seeking the support of people who can verify aspects such as place of birth etc.
