2004 SUNCORP NORTH QUEENSLAND GAMES
With just over three months to go, the Far North region of Queensland eagerly awaits the staging of the largest regional Games in Australia, to be held over Easter 2004 in the Cairns region.
The Suncorp North Queensland Games started in 1984, in Townsville and has been held on a biennial, rotational basis ever since. A total of ten Games have been held in rotation between the four major centres of North Queensland, namely Townsville, Mount Isa, Cairns and Mackay.
The eleventh Games to be held in Cairns, is also the third time that the event has returned to Cairns. A predicted 40 sports will feature in the Games, with over 5,000 competitors expected to participate.
The North Queensland Sports Foundation is funded through the cooperation of a total of twenty-nine local authorities in North Queensland, with further financial support from the Queensland Government, as well as sponsorship. Suncorp has been the major sponsor of the Games since its inception and has maintained a strong interest in the continuing growth of the event.
The Opening Ceremony, of the Games to be held on Easter Friday, 9 April 2004 promises to be spectacular. To be staged at the newly constructed Fogarty Park, on the new Esplanade area of Cairns, a bumper crowd is expected.
The Games will be launched at a media event in Cairns on 17 October. At this launch, the mascot of Foundation will also be revealed to the media. A recent competition organised within primary schools in North Queensland, resulted in the winning entry from Jade Beck from Proserpine with Fred the Frilled necked Lizard being chosen.
