Suncorp CEO John Mulcahy jetted in to Cairns today to kick off a week-long celebration of sporting prowess and success.
The North Queensland Games have been proudly supported by Suncorp since the very first Games was hosted by Townsville in 1984. Mr Mulcahy will join national and some international athletes, the business community and spectators from across Australia for the opening ceremony on Friday night (9 April) at Fogarty Park in Cairns.
The biennial Games have been identified as the largest regularly conducted regional Games in Australia and are staged in turn by each of the regions in Townsville, Mount Isa, Cairns and Mackay.
The Suncorp Signature Event, the Suncorp North Queensland Pyramid Challenge, on Saturday 10 April will be one of the most unique features of the Games. Some of Australia’s best endurance runners will participate in a gruelling climb to the summit (922 metres) of the spectacular, iconic landmark of Walsh’s Pyramid in Gordonvale, 20 kilometres south of Cairns.
Mr Mulcahy, a keen cyclist, said he and his family were excited at the prospect of being spectators at this great event.
“I’m particularly interested in the Pyramid Challenge which is an incredible endurance race and a credit to all its participants,” he said.
“I’m proud to be representing Suncorp at the events this year. This is our opportunity to thank the people of North Queensland who have supported Suncorp for a century. And I’m looking forward to meeting representatives from the 31 local government authorities, most of which partner with Suncorp for their insurance and banking needs. They are great supporters of Suncorp and I want to thank them for that support which has helped us build our services for regional Queensland.”
A total of 31 local government authorities are current members of the North Queensland Games Foundation.
The North Queensland Sports Foundation is expecting large numbers of competitors to participate in the 2004 Suncorp North Queensland Games, as has been the case since 1984.
