Cash up for grabs at the 2008 Suncorp North Queensland Games

The race for cash is on with two feature events highlighting the Athletics program during the 2008 Suncorp North Queensland Games, ensuring an action packed weekend.

The opening ceremony of the Suncorp North Queensland Games will be held on Friday evening 11th April at the Townsville Sports Reserve and there will be a hype of activity with the special feature of an Open 1500 metre men’s and women’s race being held between 7:00 and 7:30pm. Sponsors of this event are the 56 Olympic Torchbearers Club Inc. – an organisation that represents the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Torch Relay, and the North Queensland Sports Foundation – celebrating 25 years this year, and continuing to provide outstanding support to Athletics North Queensland. A total of $2,400 will be up for grabs – the winners of each race will run away with $750 plus a Trophy and their name added to the perpetual shield, as well as the honour of lighting the North Queensland Games flame. The second placegetters will receive $300 and third places receiving $150.

The money doesn’t stop there with an Open 400m women’s and men’s race also being sponsored, with the $1,200 prize pool donated by Order of Australia Medal recipient Charlie Doyle – a loyal member of Athletics North Queensland. The final of this feature event will be held on the afternoon of Saturday 12th April (if necessary heats will be conducted on Saturday morning).  There is $300 for first place in both the men and women’s races, $200 going to the second placed athlete and $100 for the third placegetter.

This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your talent or watch others try to beat their opponents and the clock, so don’t miss out! Athletes who are interested in participating in the above events need to complete a nomination form. Entry costs are $4.00 per event. Nomination Forms are available on the NQSF website www.nqsports.com.au and the ANQ website www.athleticsnorthqld.org.au.
