2010 Suncorp NQ Games off and running

The first event of the 2010 Suncorp North Queensland Games was held over the Easter weekend, and gave organisers a taste of what was to come next weekend, when the rest of the over 40 sports will be staged in the Cairns Region.

The Northern Australian Championships in Inline Hockey were contested and the action was fast and furious.  Over 120 competitors made their way from Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville as well as a healthy contingent from Cairns. The Cairns Recreation Centre was full to capacity to watch the finals, and after two very long days the well organised competition was complete.

One supportive and possibly exhausted mother commented that she was driving back to Townsville with her son who had competed in the inline hockey, but would be back next weekend with her daughter for the artistic skating competition…such is the support for the Games.

In under 11’s, the Townsville Jesters took gold, Cairns silver and the Townsville Rhinos took the bronze.

In under 14’s the Townsville Jesters took gold, Cairns silver and the Townsville Rhinos the bronze.

In under 17’s the Cairns team took the gold, the Townsville Rhinos the silver and the Mackay Redbacks the bronze.

In Senior B competition, the Townsville Rhinos took gold, Mackay Redbacks the silver and the Cairns team won bronze.

In the final game a very close game was secured in the final minute, with a composite team from Cairns and Mackay winning gold from the Townsville 1 team who took the silver, with the Townsville 2 team winning bronze.
