The North Queensland Sports Foundation (NQSF) is marking a significant milestone in 2023, celebrating 40 years of championing sport and active lifestyles across the region. Since its establishment in 1983, the Foundation has been a driving force behind grassroots sport, fostering talent, and delivering major sporting events that bring North Queensland communities together.
A Uniquely Governed Foundation
What sets the NQSF apart is its unique governance structure, with a membership base of 25 Local Government Areas (LGAs). This collaborative approach ensures that sport in North Queensland is driven by the communities it serves, making it the largest and longest-running regional sports foundation in Australia. Through this model, the Foundation has successfully provided opportunities for athletes of all levels while strengthening the region’s sporting culture.
The North Queensland Games: A Sporting Spectacle
A signature achievement of the Foundation is the North Queensland Games, the largest multi-sport event in regional Australia. Held every two years, the Games attract thousands of athletes from across the state and beyond, uniting competitors of all ages and skill levels. The event features a diverse range of sports, from traditional competitions like athletics and swimming to emerging sports that reflect the region’s unique sporting culture.
Since its inception in 1984, the North Queensland Games have played a vital role in boosting tourism, economic activity, and community engagement in host cities across the region. The Games provide a platform for aspiring athletes to compete at a high level, often serving as a stepping stone to state and national competitions. More than just a competition, the event embodies the spirit of inclusivity, regional pride, and sporting excellence that defines North Queensland.
The Legacy of the Sports Star Awards
Among its many contributions, the NQSF proudly hosts the North Queensland Sports Star Awards, the longest-running sports awards in the region. These prestigious awards celebrate the dedication and achievements of athletes, coaches, and sporting clubs, highlighting the depth of talent and commitment to sport in North Queensland. The Foundation’s Hall of Fame honors the legacy of sporting legends who have made a lasting impact in North Queensland, with inductees being announced at the awards as well as 8 major sporting categories, celebrating sporting legends in North Queensland. This year, The Sportstar Awards will be hosted by Mackay Regional Council.
Supporting Sport Through Key Programs and Initiatives
Beyond recognizing athletic excellence, the NQSF is actively involved in developing grassroots sports through a variety of initiatives. The Sports Education Tours bring expert coaching and training to regional and remote areas, ensuring young athletes have access to high-quality development and club capacity opportunities. The Outlanders Festival of Sport showcases North Queensland’s unique sporting landscape, across the west of NQ. Plus, scholarships continue to provide financial and development support for emerging athletes, helping them reach their full potential. Meanwhile, Club Hub NQ serves as a vital resource for local sports clubs, offering assistance with development, administration, and resources. Additionally, Move It NQ initiative encourages community participation in physical activity, promoting health and well-being across the region.
