The North Queensland Sports Foundation is proud to announce that the 2025 North Queensland Sportstar Awards are returning to Townsville in October of 2025 – with nominations opening this year on July 25th.
Now in it’s 35th year, the Sportstar Awards capture nominations and achievements across the sportscape from 9 categories – from juniors and masters athletes, to volunteers and now this year for the first time, officials.

“Personally, as a resident of Townsville for nearly 30 years, I’m quite excited”, said NQSF’s Chief Executive Officer Alexander J. Fisher speaking to 7 News.
“Since 1990 the North Queensland Sports Foundation has been on a campaign to find the best junior and the best senior athlete, (athlete) with a disability, coach….”

“This year we’ve got a couple surprises up our sleeves, including appearances from at least 2 Townsville Olympic Gold Medallists.”
The Awards are an opportunity for the non-profit to give out prize monies and trophies, but also to treat the host city to a gala dinner with sporting celebrities, and acts as an opportunity to discover the next up and coming talent.
Olympian Tori West, who took out the Seniors Category at the 2024 Awards last October in Mount Isa provided the following statement.
“There’s much talent and ambition in NQ, and we often have to fight harder to get the opportunities. With the right attitude, this makes us better as athletes.
The NQ Sportstar Awards is a celebration of what it means to be an athlete in North Queensland.”

When contacted for a statement, 4x Paralympic Medallist, Cairns Swimmer Grant ‘Scooter’ Patterson said,
“It was an absolute honour to receive the (Para-Athlete) of the Year in 2024! Make sure you get your nominations in and help find the next sporting prowess!”
Nominations open to the public July 25th and run through to September 6th 2025, with the event taking place on October 25th at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Center.
