The NQ games launched in true North Queensland style with Townsville sprinter Jake Doran challenging Cowboys superstar Matty Bowen to a race amongst a mass of sporting hosts and media at The Ville Resort and Casino.

Townsville is set to host the largest multi-sport event in regional Australia from April to May this year, attracting over 4,000 participants across 40 sports. As the most inclusive games ever, sporting communities in Townsville, the Burdekin, Charters Towers and Hinchinbrook will host a range of sports from inclusive events such as Orienteering, a Community Fun Run, to high performance events such as regional and state championships.

North Queensland Sports Foundation Chair and Townsville City Councillor Maurie Soars says the Games will inject both economic and social benefits to the Townsville community.

“These Games are about more than just sport, with an estimated 4,000 participants expected to descend on our city and neighbouring regions. Townsville will experience a significant economic injection to the tune of around $3million” Cr Soars said.

With excitement mounting for the 2032 Olympics to be hosted in Queensland, Cr Soars anticipates that some of the younger athletes who will compete in these games will be Olympic athletes in 2032. “The North Queensland Games offer a unique and important pathway for local athletes, providing a foundation for our local kids to see themselves becoming our nation’s future Olympians and sporting heroes. We are thrilled to be hosting this iconic sporting event in Townsville.”

The North Queensland Sports Foundation CEO, Stephen Farrell is confident the event will be a highlight for the region. “We are looking forward to seeing Townsville come to life with sportspeople, officials and spectators across a very large range of sports. Communities across North Queensland are sporting fanatics and the Games provide a very unique platform to compete against neighbours in friendly rivalry,” Farrell said.

The official opening ceremony will take place on Friday April 29 at Jezzine Barracks with the NQ Games Community Concert taking place Saturday April 30th at the same venue.
