Special guest confirmed for the Inaugural Western Games

In less than four weeks, Mount Isa will host the inaugural Western Games multi-sport event, with organisers today announcing former Olympian Sara Carrigan as the Games ambassador.

Olympic cycling gold medallist Sara Carrigan will be attending the Games and lending her sporting expertise to help inspire competitors and promote the Games. 

Sara has enjoyed a successful cycling career for over 13 years, and has a very impressive list of achievements, which she is looking forward to sharing with Mount Isa residents during her visit.  

A gold medallist from the Athens Olympics in 2004 in the 130 kilometre road race, Sara’s appearance has been arranged through the assistance of CS Energy’s Mica Creek Power Station. 

Site Manager, Greg Dale said Mica Creek Power Station was pleased to help “switch on” the inaugural Games.

“We’re proud to be a sponsor of the first Games and we’re delighted to welcome Sara Carrigan to Mount Isa,” Greg said.

Sara’s commitments whilst in Mount Isa will include visiting the Micra Creek Power Station to meet with CS Energy employees, being the guest speaker at a Mayoral reception at the Mount Isa City Council, meeting with local cyclists as well as being the official starter of the first cycling event of the Games.

Sara Carrigan

Sara Carrigan is an Australian Professional cyclist who has enjoyed a successful cycling career of over 13 years, which commenced at the age of fifteen after being identified through a High School Sports Talent Search.

Some of Sara’s greatest successes include winning the Gold Medal in the 130km Road Race at the 2004 Athens Olympics Games, 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games medalist, two time National Champion, medalist at every Australian Championships since 2001, Australian representative at 8 World Championships, 2 Olympic Games (2004 and 2008) and 2 Commonwealth Games (2002 and 2006), being named Australian Female Road Cyclist of the Year 2002, 2003 and 2004 and receiving the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the 2005 Australia Day Honours List.

Sara recently announced her retirement in December 2008 following the Beijing Olympic Games and now  has an ambition to pass on her years of cycling knowledge and experience to help others relish in the simple joys and wonders of riding a bike that she has enjoyed for half her life.
