2010 Sport Development Bursaries Awarded to 32 young achievers

thanks to BHP Billiton Cannington Mine

The North Queensland Sports Foundation is delighted to announce that another 32 young sporting people from throughout North Queensland will receive North Queensland Sport Development Bursaries. Once again the North Queensland Sports Foundation would like to acknowledge the support of BHP Billiton Cannington Mine for the generous donation of $16,000 towards this important project.

A total of thirty two young North Queenslanders will receive $500 each towards furthering their sporting careers. To acknowledge their achievements, they will also be given a unique embroidered tracksuit top, at presentations at various Council offices in the near future. As was the case in 2009, a total of 16 member Councils of the North Queensland Sports Foundation forwarded applications.

Now in its seventh year, the number of young athletes that have received one of the North Queensland Sport Development Bursaries is now a very creditable 181.

Ruth Kaurila, the Community Relations team at Cannington Mine, said BHP Billiton Cannington is once again delighted to be able help young people from North Queensland further their sporting careers, particularly when financial pressures may otherwise make this difficult.

Chair of the North Queensland Sports Foundation, Cr Margaret Cochrane, said the Foundation extends its best wishes to each of the bursary recipients.  “We are confident each of the young recipients will continue to excel in their sport and will wear their tracksuit tops with pride.  It is amazing that we have been able to provide over 180 bursaries since the programme started,” she said.
