Thank you to all who attended the 2019 NQ Sportstar Awards Gala Dinner hosted by the Hinchinbrook Shire Council in Ingham.
We are pleased to announce the 2019 Category winners. Well done to all!


⭐️Athlete with a Disability

WINNER: Chelseann Osborne, Sailing – Townsville City Council

Chelseann won Gold at the Special Olympics World Games held is Abu Dhabi. She was awarded Australian Sailor of the year with a Disability 2018 and Queensland of the year with a Disability 2019. Chelseann went on to win the AWD category at the QSport Awards in Brisbane.


RUNNER UP: Joel Mundie, Swimming – Cairns Regional Council

Joel completed at the National Age Championships in Adelaide where he came back with 2 x Gold, 1 Silver and 1 x Bronze medal also breaking 6 Australian Age Records- some being held for over 15 years. Joel holds 9 Australian Age Records and 1 Open Men’s record.

⭐️Senior

WINNER: Calvin Franklin, Triathlon – Mackay Regional Council

Calvin competed at the ITU World Triathlon Championships in Switzerland winning Gold in the Standard Distance in the 18-19 years Age Group. He came first in the Under 19 Morteton Bay Triathlon Nissan State Series, 1st in the Queensland Triathlon Series Raby Bay and 5th at the Mooloolaba Triathlon.


RUNNER UP: Nash Lowis, Athletics – Townsville City Council

Nash competed at the 2019 Oceania Championships winning Gold with a record throw of 79.19m. At the Australian Athletics Championships he won bronze in the open men’s and finished 4th in this years Brisbane Classic. Nash competed at the Queensland Athletics Championships winning silver in the open men’s.

⭐️Junior

WINNER: Kiera Wiseman, Water Skiing – Burdekin Shire Council

Kiera placed 2nd in Jump and 3rd overall for Australia in the under 14 Junior Water Ski Team at the Australian v’s New Zealand Challenge. Kiera placed 2nd in Jump, 3rd in Slalom, 4th in Trick and 2nd overall in the National Waterski championships this year


RUNNER UP: Brandee Ferguson, Rodeo – Cloncurry Shire Council

Brandee was the first and only Australian to qualify in the RFDTV Junior American USA event which gave her an automatic qualification to the 2020 RFDTV Junior American event. At the Trans Tasman International Challenge Brandee Qualified on the Australia Team and contributed toward Australia being victorious with a personal win and second in the barrel race competition. Brandee won the Barrel Racing and Breakaway Roping at the AAYLA Sumner series in Alvin Texas.

⭐️Masters

WINNER: Sarah Lane, Dragon Boating – Townsville City Council

Sarah competed at the 14th International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Thailand winning Gold in the 10’s boat 200m and Gold in the 500m, silver in the 10’s boat 2000m event and bronze in the 20’s boat 1000m event. At the Australian Dragon Boat Titles Sarah’s team placed in the top 6 for the 10’s boat 200m and 500m and placed silver in the QLD regional team state vs state event.


RUNNER UP: Leanne Knox, Powerlifting – Whitsunday Regional Council

At the World Raw Powerlifitng Championships in Virginia Beach America, Leanne finished 1st in the Masters 45-49yr 72kg category, 3rd in the open category 72kg and broke the back squat world record. She is currently ranked 1st in the world of all fully drug tested federations 45-49yr 72kg category. Leanne broke 4 national records.

⭐️Service to Sport

WINNER: Peter Shefford, Touch Football / Rugby League – Townsville City Council

Peter coaches the Shark Touch Boys 15’s (Townsville Junior Touch), Townsville Boys 18’s (NQ Regional Championships) and as assistant coach for the Townsville Blackhawks B14’s (NRL Junior RL Championships). He is president of both the Shark Touch and Junior Touch Club. On a state level his is a selector for the Queensland Men’s 50s- QLD State Cup and QLD Secondary Schools Boy 15s- QSST Championships. He has previously coached the Australian Defence Force Warriors Men’s 40’s and coached the Samoa Men’s Open team in the Pacific Games and Fit World Cup.


RUNNER UP: Joe Pennisi, Rugby League – Hinchinbrook Shire Council

Joe has been involved with Rugby League for over the past fifty years. He has played, refereed and coached at a local, North Queensland and State level. For twenty years he coached the senior teams at Abergowrie College. Joe joined the Herbert River Crushers where he has coached Junior & Seniors teams. This year Joe was instrumental in ensuring the QRL Country week was played in Ingham.

⭐️Sporting Excellence

WINNER: Portia Eden, Cairns Regional Council

Portia is a 3 x’s U12 World BMX Champion, most recently winning the 2019 World #1 on the cruiser bike. She is the 2019 National Champion in the “Cruiser Category”, she competed at the Grand United States Tulsa and has achieved 1st place at all state and regional competitions this year.
